Exhibition "Living Spaces"

The first section examines the history of municipal planning and building in medieval times from its beginnings in the 11th century until 1500 A.D. The development of Braunschweig into a medieval city is displayed. Different types of residential buildings during the Middle Ages are presented illustratively. The focus is on the phenomenon of bowers.

The second section focusses on everyday life and the change of civilization. Housing conditions of past centuries are compared to today’s. It also considers younger eras as industrialisation and the urbanisation boom in the 19th century, severe destructions during World War II and subsequent reconstruction.
