As with St. Martini and St. Katharinen, building began on St. Andreas in the new town with a Romanesque basilica, which was then extended in the late middle ages into a hall church. At 93 metres, the south tower is the highest church tower in Braunschweig and can be climbed, having 389 steps to the top. In the 16th century it was one of the highest church towers in the world at 122 metres. Inside the church there is a depiction of the crucifixion of St. Andreas by Braunschweig artist Jürgen Weber.
